My library shelves this miniseries as a "movie," and it was a prequel to Lonesome Dove, with McMurtry co-writing the script based on his novel.  So I guess he's to blame for the silliness of the dialogue, with lines like (this isn't verbatim), "A fighting man needs someone to fight with after he's defeated those he's fought with."  The aptly named Simon Wincer directed.
