While this isn't on the level of the book (reviewed here: https://rereadingeverybookiown.blogspot.com/2012/06/cricket-in-times-square.html), this is the best so far of these Chuck Jones adaptations of children's classic literature. It's helped by the voice cast, especially Mel Blanc as Tucker Mouse. (And, yes, June Foray voices yet another mother character.) The character design can't match Garth Williams's of course, but I would argue that cutting down on the views of human faces (until that tear-jerking montage of a music-charmed New York) was a wise choice, since the humans are the weakest part of the book. At twenty-five minutes, the story understandably feels rushed, but the main elements are here, including the importance of friendship among creatures who are different from each other.
