While Hannah's employers are in India for a year, leaving the children behind, the household is visited by their debutante niece Isabel Hutchinson (Sophie Walker) and her chaperone Great-Aunt Effie (Rosalind Knight).  Captain Mason flirts with Isabel, which prompts Mrs. St. John to arrange to finally consummate the affair.  Meanwhile, Isabel thinks of Hannah as a friend and wants to employ her as a lady's maid, but Hannah is more concerned about shutting down a "home" in the country where parents send their children to be safe from disease, unaware that the matron is starving and abusing the children.  And Lydia's crush on Lord Hugh is crushed when he forces a drunken kiss on her.  (She bites his finger and then apologizes.)  The only nanny whose life seems to be going all right is Matty, but wait until she finds out that the footman she's allowing a cautious courtship with accidentally killed someone.
