Hosts Abbott & Costello do stale burlesque routines with very cheap sets. (A "car" keeps falling over, and a torn pillow "snows" down for the rest of the hour.) The funniest thing is actually the commercials, for Colgate, Palmolive, and Ajax, with lots of emphasis on "purity" and multi-tasking. (It not only cleans your teeth, it cleans your breath! It not only washes your skin, it brings out your beauty! Etc.) And the musical acts made me wince. Yes, Charles Laughton does a good rendition of the Gettysburg Address, but the scene it's in doesn't particularly make any more sense than the one where A & C hassle "Mr. Warner" to prove they don't need the $5 they plan to borrow. The 59-minute hour is sort of historically interesting, but, no, I won't be continuing with this five-disc set. (Filed under A for "Abbott & Costello.")
And, yes, we now have a 48-year span for NBC on this blog.
