The regulars:
Maybe it's that I've never read any of Herriot's famous books, here adapted by Brian Finch, or maybe it's that this is the second series of the programme, but it took me awhile to get my bearings. Still, I enjoyed the period detail and the touches of humour, not only among the three veterinarians and their receptionist (Herriot's wife), but also in the subplot about a very eccentric woman with many cats and a beleaguered husband. This is set just before World War II, with some fear of Hitler, but nothing serious yet. And, yes, it's odd to see Hardy at the relatively young age of 52.
Sonia Graham would return in the role of cat lady Mrs. Bond. This is one of twelve episodes that Peter Moffatt directed.
