This is the beginning of the seventh series of the programme.  As near as I can tell, Lionel (Geoffrey Palmer) and Jean Hardcastle (Judi Dench) met during the Korean War and then reunited years later.  She has two grown daughters, Judith (Moira Brooker) and Sandy (Jenny Funnell), who have romances with respectively Alistair Deacon (Philip Bretherton) and Harry (David Michaels), but this episode is primarily about Lionel's recent hearing loss.  For some reason, everyone is hesitant to tell Lionel, and there are even jokes about him getting violent if people talk to him about it!  Still, I'll watch at least another episode, since of course Dench is good.
