I've rarely found Dawn French funny, so I had the feeling I wouldn't like her as the title character, but she's actually better than the rest of the cast, who play her idiotic parishioners. This was the opening of the third series and obviously very late in the '90s, but it feels like a throwback to the '70s, from the winky double-entendres to the overly amused studio audience (or laugh track), but without the charming tackiness of an actual '70s sitcom.
