It's 1916 so there are several scenes set at the Front, including Thomas, still a jerk, deliberately getting shot at so he can be sent home. Back at Downton we meet both Bates's wife, Vera (Maria Doyle Kennedy in the first of three appearances) and Matthew's fiancee, Lavinia Swire (Zoe Boyle the first of seven times). Yes, this complicates two already complicated romances. And we also meet new maid Ethel Parks (Amy Nuttall, the first of sixteen times, so presumably she survives O'Brien's hazing). Oh, and Sybil goes off to get training as a nurse, rejecting Branson's sort of proposal.
Stephen Ventura would also be Davis on the following episode, and Ashley Pearce directed both episodes.
