After the happy ending of the previous episode, Matthew and William both return to Downton, this time seriously injured.  Matthew can't walk and he's now impotent, so he breaks things off with Lavinia.  Mary still loves him but has agreed to an engagement if Sir Richard will buy and then crush Mrs. Bates's scandalous (if now six-year-old) story about Mary and the Turk.  As for William, he wants to marry Daisy before he dies and not just Mrs. Patmore but several characters pressure her into it, to make him happy and to secure her a pension as his widow.  I was not happy with any of these turns and was even considering a C-, but this episode does have my favourite line so far, the dowager countess's remark about a telephone being more an instrument of torture than of communication.

David Sibley, a Hospital Doctor here, would be Dr. James Lovegood on the first episode of Broadchurch.   Although William is dead, his father (played by Paul Copley) would be on fifteen more episodes.  Reverend Travis (Michael Cochrane) would be back for seven more.  And new maid Jane Moorsum (Clare Calbraith) looks like she won't stick around long, as this is her first of four episodes, all in Season Two.
