It's now April 1917, and not only do we see a close-up of Thomas's hand injury but a soldier he befriends in Downton Hospital slits his wrists!  Meanwhile, Edith falls mutually in love with a farmer, but of course it doesn't work out, and the Matthew/Mary romance is dragged further out, although they're both involved with other people, who seem to have a mysterious past together. And Sybil remains mostly uninterested in the chauffeur's affections, as she throws herself into nursing.  Downstairs, the main thing is that almost everyone misses Bates, especially with no more footmen.

Giles Spencer makes his first of four uncredited cameos as an unnamed Officer, while Nicholas Blatt is in the uncredited role of Brookes, Sir Richard's Valet, his first time of four.  Cal MacAninch would return as Henry Lang in the next episode.  And Iain Glen would be back five more times as Mary's latest suitor, Sir Richard Carlisle.
