Although much of the abbey is turned into a convalescent hospital, this episode is fortunately less "medical" than others and is more about the jockeying for positions that such a set-up inspires. And Mary proves her true nobility by not exposing Lavinia's past, which is not what it seems but still would probably shock Matthew. Meanwhile, William is joining up and Mrs. Patmore pressures Daisy into accepting his proposal although her feelings are platonic. Oh, and Mr. Lang, Mr. Bates's replacement, has a shell-shocked breakdown, while Anna finds out that Mr. Bates is working in a pub and separated from his wife.
Daniel Pirrie would be Major Charles Bryant three episodes in a row. Andy Goddard would direct four more episodes.
