John Mortimer, whose Paradise Postponed (both book and series) I enjoyed, is I believe best known for this programme, which I found OK.  The quarter hour I watched was less boring than some of the other British '70s mysteries, although still pretty slow-moving.  Herbert Wise would go on to direct Cadfael and The 10th Kingdom, among many other shows.
