Alec and Ellie head to Sandbrook, sharing a hotel room but very platonically. He hopes to reopen his earlier failed case but gets resistance from the officer who can make that decision: his wife. (I'd think ex-wife but they keep saying "wife.") Meanwhile, Lee and Claire get back together, despite Alec's warnings. Susan and her dog* return to town and she testifies that it was her son Nige who she saw with Danny's dead body on the beach. And Mark, now devoted to his baby daughter, "breaks up with" Tom, who's tearful about it, although it's unclear if they've just been hanging out or if deeper feelings are involved.
Lawyer Stuart Davidson would be a Passer-by in the next series. Lucy Cohu plays Tess Henchard for the first of four times. And Hannah Rae makes her first of nine appearances as Alec's daughter Daisy.
*I don't think I mentioned it, but Nige didn't actually kill the dog, and his possession of Vince helped lead to his arrest.
