This pilot of the long-running show is Elaine-less and has other elements that might seem strange to fans. As for me, it was oddly familiar, in the sense that I watched the series (and television in general) a heck of a lot more in '89 than, say, '94. (By the time it left the air in '98, I was used to hearing about it rather than watching it.) I didn't like George or "Kessler" here, if more than the cast of The Secret Life of the American Teenager. (At least George and the neighbor meant well.) The message that men are obvious and women are mysterious is a dubious one, and I had to remember that this was 30 years ago to keep from ranting that men honking at women is less often a sign of their inability to flirt and more often an aggressive, demeaning act. Still, the dryer routine and some other stuff was cute, and compared to King of Queens, this episode was benign.
Art Wolff directed.
