While I find the new setting interesting and enjoyed meeting Mako and Bolin's relatives, this Tim Hedrick story has a couple tropes I dislike. The more minor one is that of the Mad-Max-like post-apocalyptic/punk biker gang. The more serious one is the "lovable scamp" trope, with Kai not only picking the pockets of strangers but leaving Mako and Bolin, the latter of whom regards him as a little brother, stranded in a strange city. I was happy when Kai was rounded up and thrown in jail along with other airbenders, which I don't think was the reaction Hedrick was looking for.
