Things get very depressing, with Andy's career in decline and Maggie's life in the toilet.  Ironically, Darren and Barry seem comparatively happy, working at Car Phone Warehouse.  In the end, Andy realises that a true friend like Maggie is more important than anything else, but hasn't he learned this lesson before?

It's strange picking up a programme in the middle, so I can't speak to how well the entire arc of Andy's life plays out.  I do know that watching roughly half of his rise and fall, I was sometimes impressed and sometimes let down.  There's obviously some intelligence to the writing, but too often Gervais & Merchant take the easy path.  Anyway, it averages out to a B-, and I imagine Series One is similar.  Oh, and Maggie is too good for Andy, and probably for Extras.

Note that David Tennant is in the scene where Andy is cast as a space slug on Dr. Who.
