While of course it's nice to see Robert Culp and Katherine Helmond as Debra's parents, Warren and Lois Whelan, I don't think this episode, written by Philip Rosenthal, uses them that well.  Helmond and Culp had genuine chemistry on his Who's the Boss? guest shot (although the episode itself is flawed, as discussed here
https://reviewingeverytvshowiown.blogspot.com/2017/04/whos-boss-gambling-jag.html), but we don't really see them interact much in their first of about a dozen ELR appearances.  Nor do we find out much about their dynamic with their daughter.  It's all about how the Barones, including Ray, are uncomfortable with their sophistication and, it's implied, wealth.  If they're just meant to be foils, why not pick less recognizable and vibrant performers?  Also, I didn't find much humor coming out of the clash between the families.  About one-third into the first season, this feels like just a standard sitcom, almost a textbook C+, although there are flashes of more potential.

Alan Kirschenbaum would also direct the following episode.
