Matthew and Mary return from the honeymoon and she tries to convince her rich American grandmother to financially rescue Downton Abbey. One way she hopes to convince her is by throwing a grand party, but Grandmama Martha saves the day in an unexpected way. She also steps in to save Edith's romance with Sir Anthony. Meanwhile, Bates's cellmate is menacing but Anna is still sleuthing, one-time allies O'Brien and Thomas are at odds, and Mrs. Hughes might have cancer. I'm curious about whether Daisy has a crush on Alfred or if she's just shocked by him carrying on with the American lady's maid.
Sarah Crowden would return as Lady Manville a couple seasons later. Neil Bell is Durrant on this and the next four episodes.
