It's February 1922 and Matthew has been dead for six months.  This doesn't really explain why almost everyone, not just Mary and Isobel, is so passive and listless.  The only one who really comes across as active is Cora, standing up to the cartoon-villainess of a nanny.  Speaking of villainesses, O'Brien is gone, now working for Cousin Susan.  This means that Edna is coming back, as Cora's maid, which several people think is a bad idea but are unable to stop.  Oh, and Edith's current Mr. Wrong (the editor) wants to become a German citizen in order to get a divorce, which you know is a bad idea with Hitler less than a dozen years away.

Guest Gintare Beinoraviciute would have a different uncredited role throughout the season, as a Kitchen Maid.  Jeremy Swift, who was in Gosford Park, here debuts as Spratt.  Harriet Walter, who will always and forever be Fanny Dashwood in Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility, has a plum of a cameo as Lady Shackleton, a role she'd reprise thrice.
