A young man (26-year-old Colin Firth) flashes back, from the battlegrounds of World War I, on his apprenticeship with his uncle the magician.  I found the first ten minutes or so offputting, with the contrast of war to music hall, and things picked up a bit with the beginning of the introduction of the uncle, but not enough for me to continue.  This is based on the J.B. Priestley novel.  Alan Grint directed all seven episodes.
