I can only describe this show as cutesy, from the model-looking mother and daughter to the grumpy harpist to the clumsy chef (McCarthy) to every friggin' character and outfit and tune.  I made it through the first half of this first episode. 

Edward Herrmann is typecast as the mom's aristocratic dad.  (He played FDR a few times.)  Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who did some good Roseanne episodes, wrote this one and about fifty more.  Lesli Linka Glatter directed three more episodes.
