In this second-season opener, written by Ben Joelson and Art Baer (one of thirteen for each, perhaps together), a Wacky Misunderstanding makes Gomer think that Sgt. Carter is leaving for good rather than just going on a Hawaiian vacation. Like most '60s sitcoms, this is one that I grew up watching as a '70s kid, but I honestly don't remember much about it, beyond what's still in the zeitgeist, like "Surprise, surprise, surprise!", which I saw referenced in a Washington Post comment just this morning. I couldn't have told you Pyle's rank, while I would do pretty well on a quiz about the M*A*S*H characters.
Jackie Joseph, who plays Shirley, would show up on various other shows, including as the voice of Melody on various Josie & the Pussycats cartoons. Ronnie Schell, who is regular Duke Slater, also pops up on many TV shows, including cartoons, like Wait Till Your Father Gets Home. Aaron Ruben only directed one other GP episode.
