This isn't quite as depressing as the previous episode, but it's still pretty dark, especially with a flashback to Sidney's most painful moment in the war.  The episode begins with a happier flashback, four years ago, when Sidney and Amanda met again as adults.  (It was established earlier that she went to school with his sister.)  But she gets married and not only isn't he performing the ceremony, as she once asked, but he isn't even going to the wedding.  And he confesses his one-night stand, so Hildegard dumps him.  At least he's still got his bromance with Geordie, who is seriously wounded but recovers.

Geoffrey McGivern would return a couple times as the Archdeacon in the next series, while David Troughton would come back three times in Series Two as Chief Inspector Benson.

The first series of Grantchester averages out to a high B.  It's not on the level of Broadchurch but reminds me somewhat of that, in that it's set in a British small town, although one more inland and of course not modern.  Series Two was checked out from my library, so I will proceed to Series Three (the most recent one filmed to date, although a fourth is planned).
