Historical Drama

John Thaw stars as a gruff old man who has to take in a London evacuee during World War II, and finds himself caring for and caring about the lad. William is ten and the victim of repeated physical and psychological abuse by his mother. Both Tom and William need each other. It's a bit corny and predictable but well done. Brian Finch adapted this TV-movie from the children's book by Michelle Magorian, and I don't know if the abuse was described there but it's a little hard to watch, if not as graphic as it could be. Jack Gold directed.
