Grantchester: Episode 1.5
Grantchester: Episode 1.5
ITV

Historical Drama, Crime Drama
DVD
B-
I didn't enjoy this episode as much, due to the mostly London setting, the downer mood throughout (relieved a bit by comic relief from Leonard), and Sidney's one-night stand with a jazz singer. Not that the last thing is terrible, but he understandably beats himself up about it. Interestingly, he feels unfaithful not to Amanda, whose fiance has figured out Sidney is still in love with her, but to Hildegard, who Mrs. Maguire reveals is in love with Sidney. As for the murder, Charlie's sister is the victim, so Jen's troubled but funny boyfriend is part of the depressingness of the episode.
Nakay Kpaka, who's Walter Stirling here, would be Jonah Bishop on a couple episodes of Broadchurch the following year. Peter Egan, who's Archie Johnson, was Hugh "Shrimpie" MacClare on Downton Abbey around then. Tim Fywell, who had directed the first episode of Cracker twenty years earlier, would direct six episodes of Grantchester.
