This episode ends with Sidney running off after the following events have shaken his faith:

  • Mrs. Maguire's husband Ronnie (Charlie Higson, who was Ian Winterman on Broadchurch) has returned after a decade and seems to be romancing her but ends up stealing from her before running off, and yet she can't bring herself to divorce him because of the promise she made to God;
  • A factory-owner's son literally gets away with murder;
  • Cathy finds out about Geordie's affair;
  • And, most wrenching of all, Leonard attempts suicide after his engagement ends.
This last is related to the return of Leonard's homosexual friend Daniel Marlowe (Oliver Dimsdale, who was in most of the Series Two episodes, so clearly there's quite a bit of back story I missed out on).  Much of the episode is about people trying to be true to themselves, at the risk of hurting others, as well as the pressure for clergymen to be perfect.  I was going to go with a B, but Sidney's confrontation with the archdeacon added depth to that character, and I feel like Sidney's struggle was emotionally and intellectually interesting.  With two more episodes left in this series, I'm curious to see what, if anything, gets resolved.
