I was less drawn into this episode than the first two, maybe because the crime didn't involve people that Sidney had a connection with.  This is as good a place as any to mention that Sidney is not only troubled by the woman he loves being engaged to another man, but he's haunted by memories of World War II, which has led to a drinking problem.  Like the other characters, he's not what he seems on the surface.

Joe Claflin, Mike Noble, Brian Vernel, and Frankie Wilson make their first of three appearances as respectively DC Atkins, Val, Tam, and George.  Nick Brimble debuts as Jack Chapman and would become more of a regular in the next two series.  You might recognize Lucy Black, who plays Isabel Livingstone, from The Durrells in Corfu, where she has a regular role as Florence Petridis (playing a middle-aged pregnant woman on both programmes as it happens).  You also might recognize Jean Marsh, Rose on Upstairs, Downstairs, as Daisy Livingstone.  Jill Robertson would direct the next episode as well.
