This episode addresses homosexuality and homophobia and is willing to make Geordie unsympathetic, not just because of his prejudices but because of his avoidance of his family when his infant son is gravely ill.  As with all of the cases so far, Sidney learns about love by seeing how other people deal with its complications.  And not coincidentally, Hildegard returns from Germany and Amanda is very jealous, despite her engagement.  Note that it is assumed here and in previous episodes that Leonard is gay but closeted, and I think he's meant to be struggling with it because of his faith.
