Well, when guest star David Spade is the best performer, you know you're in trouble.  While this wasn't as unpleasant as Girls, it does contain the following:

  • A clueless mom who's hurt when she discovers that her younger son's romantic mixtape wasn't meant for her;
  • An older son (easily the worst actor here) who gets a fake ID and is immediately approached by a cool (black) senior to buy beer for the entire senior class and yet suffers no consequences when he fails to do this;
  • A very shallow knowledge of the '80s;
  • And a rip-off of the Wonder Years looking-back narration (in this case by Patton Oswalt), and I didn't even like The Wonder Years.
Pity that my library doesn't carry the '50s Goldbergs; I've been curious about that series for decades.

This second-season opener was written by Alex Barnow, who did thirteen other episodes.  (So far!)  Seth Gordon has directed six other episodes.  George Segal plays the grandfather.
